Training and Caring for Curly Horses

Stories around the cattledrive campfires made for good company and shared knowledge in the days of the Old West. Much of what a rancher knew came from talking or listening to others. While the old myths of the Curly Horse, regarding their robust nature and abilities to survive the cold and sparse plains of the Prairie are in part true, these old stories referred to a horse that existed in wild herds roaming the Plains.

Modern Curly Horses

Today, the Curly Horse is a modern horse. The ranchers took the few surviving Curlies (which go back only a handful of horses) and crossed them to breeds such as the Working Arabian, the Morgan, the Quarter Horse, the Appaloosa and so on. While granted these horses are all robust, they have more varying needs than a wild mustang.

In order to keep our Curly Horses healthy they are kept and trained using modern methods and feeding protocols. For a Curly Horse foal to reach its full potential and best conformation, it needs supplements, good turnout, proper excercise and trimming, and proper feed and training. We offer information and guidelines on how we train and care for our Curly Horses.
