News Archive for Jan - June 2005

We would like to say hello to all our visitors from all over the world!! We are very excited that our webpage is a regular for many people from as far away as Australia, Russia, Japan, and of course all over Europe! We are very thankful for your visiting our website. We have fun with it!

28.06.05 We have some new photo pages for you! Click on the links below to see images!

More coming shortly!

25.06.05 Magic did it! Midnight before last, Magic foaled and produced the most lovely black colt! He appears to be a very dark grullo, he has a very black dorsal stripe and lighter areas between his thighs and on his muzzle and under his eyes. He has a very slate black color otherwise. Beautiful baby, great head and very muscular like his father now is. His coat is like silk, very soft to the touch. He has light waves on his rump, and very fluffy ears like his sister, Rose, had. He is either a very lightly curled horse or a straight. Time will tell. He has four white feet and a white star with thin white stripe. He will make a very impressive riding horse or a stallion if one wishes very unusual color and nice markings. He is hypoallergenic. This handsome fellow also has a name! It's *(?)ZZ Magic Jackson Joe.

We would like to take this time to summarize our foal crop! We will be adding this summary to our sales page with images as we get them in:

  • *ZZ Jack's Lark'n Lady (*CCG Warrior Billy Jack x *Grulla Vaquera Lark)
Curly grulla filly with four white feet and balanced white blaze
    - Sale pending

  • *ZZ Diamond Rain (*SS Clooney x *RR Rescue Me)
Very curly bay filly with one white coronet and white diamond star, Warmblood type, very tall will reach approx. 159 cm, excellent legs and soft well collected movement

  • *ZZ I Dream of Geenie (*SS Clooney x DKH Glory)
Very curly sorrel with sabino markings, bald face and two white hind feet. Warmblood type, shows similarites to her father, very tall with very straight legs. Could be gaited, does a very high-stepping walk with bobbing head. Will be analysed for gait

  • *(?)ZZ Magic Jackson Joe (*CCG Warrior Billy Jack x *Montana Blue Magic)
Very black grulla (shows dorsal stripe that runs through the tail) with lighter areas between hind legs, under the eyes, and on the muzzle, rest of the body is slate-black colored. Four white feet, star with thin white blaze. Light waves on rump, coat is like silk to the touch, straight legs, very muscular build. Excellent head and very much like his father.

23.06.05 Mah, the babies are sooo cute! They are getting nice and muscular and are looking more like little horses now. Rain is the calmest, she loves people and will quietly come over and stand for pets and scratches for ages. She just loves being next to you. Although she gallops and frolics like the rest, she definitely radiates quietness and self-assurance.

Geenie, Clooney's other filly, is also very people-oriented! She loves to come and visit and get scratches. She has a lot of spirit and loves to run about galloping circles round mom. This makes sense as Glory is very similar, yet under training Glory is fabulous and extremely sensitive to the bit and responsive! Geenie actually looks a lot like Clooney did when he was a foal, although she is not the same color. Her bald face is a riot, and it is hard to take photos of her because she comes straight for the camera!

Lady is getting very muscular on lovely legs, she also is very active and is becoming less shy. She will now come up to us and let us scratch her all over. She is very elegant. She and Rain also go everywhere together, and either one mom or the other babysits. They both are now eating grass and drinking water from the trough.

The biggest news is that Magic is getting ready to foal! We are very curious about what she will present us with this year. We have a customer who is interested if she produces a black curly filly! Too much to ask? Well, we will be happy as long as mom and foal are both healthy.

Karen is working on lots of pictures and some videos, she took some today, and will be taking more this afternoon, so keep your eyes pealed, they'll probably be online sometime tonight.

We have visitors coming in July and August! We are looking forward to meeting Karin from Switzerland and Amy from Scottland! Just in time to do a little riding too if they want.

20.06.05 Glory's foal finally has a name! It took us a while, but we found one that we feel is just right! *ZZ I Dream of Geenie! Geenie for short. She is growing like crazy, and loves to gallope and run about. We will get some pictures of her for you shortly (Karen tried today, but the camera batteries ran out just when she wanted to take pictures! Typical!) We are still waiting for Magic's foal to arrive. Both she and her half-sister, Rain, are extremely friendly. They entertain visitors by coming to them immediately to be petted! She's such a cutie it is going to be hard for us to sell this one.

And, riding will begin again on the 1st of July!

16.06.05 We have new images for you! These were taken on Sunday when the sun came out in the afternoon. Erwin did a great job, the pictures show just how nice it can be sometimes when the sun comes out and the horses can enjoy the garden. Our visitors enjoy it too!

13.06.05 Finally, the weather cleared up yesterday afternoon! A big rainbow crossed the sky over the Traunsee lake and the sun warmed everyone. The foals enjoyed the day outdoors, and we had loads of visitors! First, Magdelena from Germany came to visit. She has allergies to horses, is 13 years old and wanted to test the curlies. We first tried Rescue Me but she had a mild reaction to her. We then tried Glory, and Magdelena had no reaction to Glory! We were so excited. Also, Magdelena tested Glory's foal and she also had no reaction to the foal. This is a very nice result because it means this trait is inheritable! Magdelena will be coming again to try riding in the future.

We also had several groups of folks stop by to see the foals yesterday. The mares and foals are in the garden under the shade of the trees, and it makes for a nice outting. If you would like to come and see the horses, please don't hesitate, we love visitors.

Erwin took several nice pictures of the horses yesterday, we are trying to get them collected and put up a gallery on line.

We have added *ZZ Diamond Rain to our for sale page!

12.06.05 We've had our hands full the last week or so with all the new babies! The weather has been terrible, 5 degrees C at night sometimes and cold freezing wind during the day, lots of rain. We're all running around in our winter clothes. It was so good to finally give in and put on the winter boots again just to keep the feet warm! Mrs. Zierler was kind enough to make small foal blankets for the babies that were outside, as we had to make room for the new babies coming. They all did fine and are growing big and strong.

We have a name for Rescue Me's little girl: *ZZ Diamond Rain. Now we are working on a name for Glory's little girl. We will have pictures soon, as soon as the sun comes out (right now it's all grey out there!)

07.06.05 Hello! We had no internet for an entire week! That is why the updates were not coming, our appologies. We are back with a fury though, and have even more news! Yesterday morning *DKH Glory presented us with another bulls-eye, we're swimming with glee! When Karen came in the morning, she went to put hay in the stalls and saw a foal in Glory's stall standing there waving it's tail! In the semi-darkness of the stall she thought that maybe Rescue Me's baby had broken out and gotten into Glory's stall! But she could not understand why Rescue Me was so calm about it, until Karen looked closer and saw that it was a brand new foal! A filly! She has perfectly straight legs, is sorrel, and has a very broad blaze, a sabino blaze, amazing! Great job Glory and Clooney! She is tall (not quite as tall as Rescue Me's filly) and has good bone.

As promised here are some images of Rescue Me's little girl taken on Day 3. We will be putting up a picture page for the fillies very soon.

01.06.05 Curlies Austria would like to announce the arrival of *RR Rescue Me and *SS Clooney's foal at 2:00 this morning. A big long-legged beautiful bay filly with a perfect diamond in the middle of her forehead. Both mother and baby are doing fine, the filly found the milk all by herself and is getting used to her very long legs. She has a fabulous head like her mother, and will be a very large horse. Definitely Warmblood in type! A fantastic foal! A tired Karen was at the birth. Only two more foals to wait for now!

30.05.05 Our foal from Lark and Billy Jack has a name. She's *ZZ Jack's Lark'n Lady! Lady for short. She is growing and running about and has the most perfect conformation. She has a lovely well developed hind quarters now too from a lot of galloping about. Our biggest news is that she is already sold! Congratulations to the Riemanns! They couldn't have picked a better quality filly for their program (if we are allowed to brag a little)!

We are still waiting on the other foals to arrive.

23.05.05 More than we hoped for! Sometimes it is good not to have too high expectations. Because, when you do get something fantastic, you are totally surpised! That's what happened to us. Although we knew that *'Grulla Vaquero Lark and *CCG Warrior Billy Jack are a good match, we didn't know they'd do this good! Yesterday in the wee hours of the morning (3:10 am. on the 22nd of May to be exact), Lark presented us with this gorgeous curly filly. She is a dun like her mother, with lovely tiger striped legs, shoulder patches, black curly mane and a lovely dorsal stripe that runs down into her tail. To top it all off, Billy Jack added the whipping cream to the desert! He gave her a lovely symmetrical blaze and four wonderfully equal white socks! This is such a rare combination. Most importantly, filly and mom are doing great. The little one has lots of fire and is zipping all over the stall. A name is coming soon. In the mean time we have some new images of the filly for you!

16.05.05 We are overdue for an update! And, guess what? The mares still haven't foaled! The question is, can Karen stand it any longer? Lark looks like a giant plum, and Glory now looks ready to pop any day. We must appologize to folks that have been calling and asking to come see the foals. It appears the Ultrasound technique is not precise with respect to estimating foaling dates. There are a lot of factors that can change the dates, the mares can control when they foal, and can actually delay the date for up to a month. Also, it could be that Rescue Me did not take on the first breeding, and rather on the second, which means she may foal a month later than planned (so somewhere between the end of May and beginning of June). At this time, we do not have an exact date for when she will foal.

Good prices on flights!

We've found a great deal on flights for single horses. No more waiting on a full container to get your Curly out of the Midwest! Flight and Quarantine, including all health papers and documents to Luxembourg for $ 3600 (USD). That's about 2850 Euros at today's exchange rate. (Price does not include transport to the Quarantine Facility, Landing fees approx. 180 Euros, Insurance 3%, Tax 3% at LUX and Customs 11.5% at LUX). If you've been wishing to get your dream horse out of the States, now is the time. Please contact us! Quarantines are set up every two weeks, and run four weeks long. We have worked with these people before to import our own horses. No more cross borders to Canada, or extra money for missed flights. Price includes any delays or variations in a normal routine quarantine and flight (other than the horse gets sick and requires longer care.)

Other news, we had several nice visits over the long weekend. We want to thank everyone for stopping by, and a special thanks to Andrea Hempl for her visit to see our Curlies! Andrea has Curlies of her own, and we enjoyed talking Curly talk, and she was very kind about complimenting our horses. Thanks Andrea!

We are making progress on importing Frost, and everything will be finalized this week.

We've put together some new images of Rose, just goofing off! Please excuse the camera, it's very difficult to take images of a curious baby!

06.05.05 Sabine and Stefan came to visit again after going to the Wels Horse Fair! This year we are not at the fair due to all the foals coming at the same time, next year we plan to attend again. Sabine and Stefan brought also brought their cousin and his friend! There was a lot to discuss about the Curlies, and they have very exciting plans. Karen, of course, cannot stop talking Curly horses despite that it was cold and rainy. We look forward to them visiting again.

This morning, Glory's udder is filling with milk. We are so happy for her, and we hope that this time everything goes smoothly. So, it almost looks like all our foals will be coming at once! Wouldn't you know, the Curlies just love a good joke on mom and dad!

04.05.05 We're still waiting! But, the exciting news is, that *RR Rescue Me's udder is starting to swell a little! Wait and see, all the foals will probably come at once, poor Karen! We are so excited though about this foal. *Clooney has excellent movement and extension, good muscling and a sweet temperment, and he did really well showing off his jumping ability. *Rescue Me has the wonderful height, conformation, and soft gaits for dressage, we think this foal will be a winner!

*RR Rescue Me following Karen around the roundpen, and with Lene "you want me to get on that big horse?" Jenzen astride last week enjoying a quiet moment at Curlies Austria. Thanks Lene!

03.05.05 We have some new pictures for you! For all those who have been following along with our foal watch, here are some shots of the ladies and a tired Karen during our foaling season! (Please click on the link below).

02.05.05 We hope everyone had a great May 1st celebration! We have exciting news. No, no foals yet!!! Can you believe it, it seems Lark had a false alarm, and is now truly on schedule for her predicted due date. And, it appears Rescue Me will foal later than her due date (which has already passed!).

No, our news is that we have found a horse for Brigitta! She will be buying E.G. Frost! A gaited gelding bred by Jesse Zimpel in Wisconsin! We are very excited, as Frost will come to stay at Curlies Austria until he is trained for riding, which will be in a year or so. Frost will be the first gaited Curly in Austria! We want to congratulate Brigitta on her choice and are now working on his import!

Frost as a foal with his mom.

27.04.05 My goodness, boy do horses have a sense of humor! Lark has decided to wait it out longer. So, we are slowing down our foal-watch! And, just in time to enjoy a visit from Lene Jenzen, a curly breeder in Norway. We are having fun chatting Curly Horses! We cannot stop!

21.04.05 Well, isn't life funny, just when you think you have it all sorted out, something new happens! Lark, who we thought would foal later (based on the Ultrasound in Fall last year) is actually getting ready to foal! We are on foal-watch now, and Karen is VERY sleepy. We'll be letting you know how it goes. On the other hand, RR Rescue Me who we thought would be getting ready to foal now, is showing no signs of it! So, maybe she took on a later heat cycle. If so we will have to change her due date to about 25 days later!

Due to our foal-watch, we might be a little slow in answering email. So we ask everyone to be patient with us, if it takes a day or two for us to reply!

Beatrice came by and asked to borrow a lead-line for her class report on riding. She took one of our Natural Horsemanship leads with her. They had other items too, such as a grooming box full of grooming brushes and tools, and also riding boots to show the class. The funny thing was, when she brought out the lead-line everyone in the class asked why it smelled so funny?! She told them, that is from the Curlies! They smell differently! The whole class was amazed, and Beatrice said that the smell was very strong and very noticeably different from the normal horse smell the other items had! Cool!

Beatrice also brought by a really nice photograph made by her father when she came riding one day. We will scan it and put it on the website (as soon as sleepy Karen can figure out how to reconnect the scanner).

We have other news in the works too, we believe we have found a horse for Brigitta! This lady has been looking long and hard for the right Curly. As soon as everything falls into place we'll be making the announcement.

OK, it's back to sleeping in the stall (someday when the logistics are better we will be able to install that camera system so we don't have to sleep in the stall!).

15.04.05 We have updated our pages with new images of the stallions and also new information. You can see the stallions pages which now include their studbook numbers, news statistics and breeding information and registration numbers, also their parents registration numbers in their pedigrees, and new images on our "our herd" page (great head shots!) and on their pedigree pages which we will be turning into main pages for the stallions shortly as we move things around.

For new updates please see:

11.04.05 Stallions inspected and approved at the OeZP HAK 2005! We are very proud to announce that both our stallions were inspected and approved (gekoert) by the Austrian Breeding Association of Special Breeds (OeZP) on Saturday. 35 stallions from 19 breeds were represented. Clooney very much impressed the panel of judges with his movement and extention placing in the top 6 horses at the inspection. Both boys looked dapper, and got a lot of attention from the crowd and the judges who were interested in their curls and conformations. SS Clooney and CCG Warrior Billy Jack are the first Curly stallions to be approved in Austria, and there is only one other inspected and approved (gekoert) stallion in all of mainland Europe.

Our foals this year are eligible for entry into the national Special Breeds (OeZP) studbook in Austria which is recognized European wide. Our stallions and breeding mares have all been inspected and approved as high quality breeding stock.

We would like to thank Nicole Sprikler for supporting our trip to the HAK 2005! Her experience and insight assisted us at every step. We would also like to thank Mr. Dr. Maier (President), Mr. Ing. Scheiblauer (Vice President), and Mr. Ing. Schmied (Secretary) for supporting the Curly Horse breed in Austria and emmense help in getting through the paperwork of founding a studbook and participating in inspections. Please see our front page for a wonderful image of Billy Jack showing off his stuff, and Mr. Dr. Maier's very big smile.

06.04.05 It is that time of year again when Karen and Erwin become the walking sleepless zombies watching for foaling mares in the night. Mares love to foal at night, and most breeders get no sleep at this time of year! Our exciting news is that Lark has started showing signs of "bagging up" or milk swelling in her utter. This is a typical sign that a mare is preparing to foal. It should be about 5-6 weeks now on average, so Lark is right on time. Interestingly, Resi has not yet started to show signs, and we had thought she would foal before Lark. Maybe she took on a later heat cycle than we first thought, then again maybe in the next couple of days she will also start to "bag up".

We are so very excited about this foal, *Grulla Vaquera Lark is such a wonderful mare, she not only has a superb conformation but is sweet and gentle and produces very gentle babies (Moon is a super example). This will be our first foal by *Warrior Billy Jack and is for sale. A very rare bloodline in Europe, this foal will be linebred *Seeker's Warrior top and bottom (grandfather and great grandfather on the dam's and sire's sides) and will have a string of Warrior/Hammrich horses in the pedigree. Lark's classy touch of top winning Appaloosa and Quarter Horse ancenstors enhance the line. Top quality breeding following Ernie Hammrich's tradition.

04.04.05 More visitors! We had a great time with Tanja and David who stayed over the weekend. They enjoyed hiking all over the region in the mountains and around the lakes here, and they were lucky to have such fabulous hiking weather! It's a good thing too, because we also enjoyed eating out a lot while they were here! Lots of Kaieserschmarm! (A very tasty Austrian dish that is like pancake batter pushed around the pan like scrambled eggs, with powdered sugar over it and with plum sauce, it is sooo good!) So, they needed to do a lot of hiking (we guess). Tanja also enjoyed testing the Curlies. She got to go for a short ride on Glory, spending 15 minutes in the saddle without a reaction. Was great. Today we had new visitors. Sabine and Stefan from the Steyermark came to test the horses. It went very well. Sabine, who had to give up her own horse due to developing allergies over the years, had good results too. Although she reacted a little to Glory, (funny, Tanja reacted to Clooney but not Glory, while Sabine to Glory but not Rescue Me) Sabine was able to be around most all of our other Curlies without any problems, and took a ride on Rescue Me. Despite Resi's shedding, the hair didn't bother Sabine at all! After spending an whole afternoon with the Curlies, poor Bosko (their very lovely, young black Cocker Spaniel, who Karen fell in love with) got a break as the group went to drop off their baggage at Moosmann and went for a bite to eat at the Inn. More food! Agnes did a great job of cooking as always, and Bosko got to sleep on the cool floor, tuckered out after all the horsey excitement! We would like to thank everyone for coming to visit the Curlies and, we look forward to you all coming again soon.

02.04.05 We hope you enjoyed yesterday's April Fools Day joke. It was written by our young friend, 11 year old, Beatrice Kornitzer, who loves to visit the horses and helps out when school work allows. Thanks Beatrice!

01.04.05 The Webersdorfer Stall (Curlies Austria Farmhouse) - a Haunted Castle?

Helga, who previously leased the Webersdorfer stall explains: "It was on April 1st, 1995, just like 50 years before! I remember it still, as if it were yesterday. It was horrible. I came straight home from work to look in on my two horses, Santana and Kubal, as always. It had just turned dark. When I saw that the saddle and tack, that I needed for the next say, were covered with mud. Shocked, I made my self comfortable in the hay, began to clean while listening to the friendly snorts of my horses. Then, unexpectedly someone or something upset the friendly atmosphere. I slipped outside. But, there I could not see any shape or form that I could take seriously. So, I went back to working in the stall. The next day, while I was again by my horses, I was surprised: the horses were totally worked up, the tack was again filthy and the hay was strewn all over the floor. I had to forget the trail ride I had planned."

"Since over the next two weeks the horses were still spooked, I finally decided to install a hidden camera on one of the roof beams in the stall. This way I could monitor in the evenings from home. Four hours long I watched absolutely nothing. Then something happened: the horses were nervous, the door opened itself. I saw with my own eyes. It was horrible. Then I knew what it was, what that form was. It was a ghost! As fast as I could, I drove to Santana and Kubal, packed up all my things, loaded the horses and made tracks in the dust. Even today, just like for 50 years ago, that ghost makes his mischief in that stall. Always, when I enter that building, I hear that ghost's crying in my ears!"

31.03.05 The day is not over, but it is already starting out very nice. Tanja is visiting from Berlin, she got to meet all the horses and start her testing. So far she has had very little to almost no reactions to being around the horses (except one sneeze after visiting Magic). She did show a skin reaction after petting Clooney, so we didn't do anymore skin testing just air sniffing until that clears away. Tanja and David took a lot of hair samples with them and will come visit again tomorrow to see some riding demonstrations and do more testing! We're looking forward to it! Tanja really likes Glory, who is in fabulous form at the moment and has a very warmblood type look!

As it stands, we still don't have anyone fix for leasing Rescue Me and Lark! We'll begin advertising the two in local and national papers shortly. So, let us know if you are interested!

24.03.05 Time flies when you're having fun! We have great weather at the moment. Warm sunny days, great for riding! First off, all the snow melted within two or three days! We were swimming in pools of water. Our fields were under a sheet of water as broad as they! The waters have finally receded, and the green grass is growing.

We have had a lot of inquiries lately! All the way from France and Scotland, even! Lot's of excitement about the Curlies and also a lot of people wanting to test them. We have also seen strong interst in Simson and Glory from several parties. Many people are also asking after our foals! Most asked after mares and fillies. Keep in mind, also, that a gelding is a very good choice for a family horse. Geldings are very constant emotionally, and for that reason are one of the best choices for a family riding partner.

We had some fun rides the last two days as well. Marie and Eremina from Vienna came to visit. They know our acquaintances, Gaby and Aussi in Vienna, who we know through our good friends, Claudia and Hanspeter! She is looking for a horse to lease over summer, and we offered her to try Rescue Me. Marie is a very good rider, and has her "Nadel" or "Needle" which is a level in Dressage. Rescue Me enjoyed her very much, a very good match. As Marie and Karen were riding some people out walking went past, and they looked at Marie on Rescue Me and said, look at that coat would you? Karen had to smile, Resi is still in her winter coat, although is shedding and looks like a giant teddy bear. Karen took Glory out on her first ride outside the hall, and she did really well. We thank Marie for coming by!

On the second day, Beatrice was there for a lesson and worked on refining her hands. She had her Papa, Karl, and her friend, Lise, with her. Karl was very facinated by the hand work, he compared it to playing a musical instrument where you must spend years refining your hands. Karen said, yes, exactly! Beatrice worked Resi a little bit on the trot, who huffed and puffed (Resi that is!), getting close to that foaling date. Glory also got to work a little around the farm, she's still very green, but we will get there. Karl took pictures, so maybe we'll get some new images for you!

Speaking of the coats, the curls are slowly disappearing! It is always sad to see them shed away, that is why Curly Breeders love Winter, because they get to see all those lovely curls!

15.03.05 Received a call from a customer asking about registering Curly Horses in Germany! We would like to help customers and the public, and also clear up some misconceptions, to understand more about registering Curly Horses. We would also like to say that in Europe both ICHO and ABC registered horses are welcome and registerable. Please see our new page! It is also listed on the sidebar for easy access from all pages. We hope to have it also very soon in German.

Registering Your Curly Horse

13.03.05 We're moving right along here with the updates! We've now updated Clooney's pedigree text in the English version. We have also updated our for sale pages yet again. We now have our 2005 foals listed for sale, and we have made the for sale page easier to read by adding links to the top of the page! Check out what we have to offer you! Top quality Curlies for the best price. Our horses produce Color, Curls and Conformation!

Later update! We have now also updated the pedigree pages for several of breeding mares, with new images, including pictures of their previous foals, and alterations to the text. See the following:

12.03.05 We have updated the images for our stallions on their pedigree pages. We will also be updating the text there too to tell you more about them. Please see our boys' pedigrees!

We have also finally completed Rose's pedigree in English! Have a look for some nice new images of Rose and find out about her background and breeding! (Coming in German shortly, as usual!)

11.03.05 We have updated our sales page again. We have added new images of the stallions, and we now have Half-Leasing (Pflegepferde)! Please see our for sale page for details on leasing one of our riding mares.

09.03.05 It is picture time again. Although it is STILL snowing, we did have a couple of days of beautiful weather around the 1st of March. We took the camera out and got a few really nice shots of some of the mares enjoying the sunshine! (Please click on the image or link below to see more pictures):

Winter impressions of March 2005! (click here for more!)

01.03.05 Minus 17 degrees Celcius in the night! BRRRRRrr.... Water froze, horses were fine though. We've been feeding them loads of extra feed for these temperatures. Cannot beat those robust Curlies for surviving cold temps! Actually, they are all starting to lose their winter coats! So, it is time to collect wool for spinning, very exciting.

We updated the image on our main page, finally! Please see our main page in English or German/Deutsch to see the new image. It's from today! Isn't she growing?!

Today was such great weather, despite the cold, that it was perfect to start Glory in the outdoor roundpen. Both Resi and Glory were worked together (to get that lazy Resi moving!) After that, Glory was saddled outdoors for the first time. She was a little nervous to start, but did great. Karen worked her in the walk and trot first, and then mounted her. No problem, they then went through the whole routine in the snow. The snow was great as it forced Glory to concentrate and listen carefully to the rider.

Karen has been going through some back images which have not yet been posted here. So, we'll be posting some nice random shots as they come up. Here is one of Erwin and the mares in late Fall, enjoy!

27.02.05 Glory and Rose came home! Glory is adjusting to the new routine and is very happy to see Resi again (remember they went through quarantine and the flight from Canada together in 2003 so they sort of stick together like glue). Glory will begin to be ridden outdoors in the roundpen now, well, as soon as it stops snowing! Rose is a sweetie, very mild mannered, but still spirited. She's grown a lot and is such a pretty color. Still light golden on her body, with a white mane and tail, and darker sort of apricot colored legs (that dun and palomino combination together). She's extremely fuzzy, with a very thick coat, and curls in her ears. She has a very thick double-mane. We put her out together with her half-sister, Lark, who is a very mellow horse and makes a good auntie for Rose.

22.02.05 More and more snow, but we seem to be getting used to it. Our neighbor, Schiffbanker, got out his Weidimann machine and plowed a little path to the stallions! That was great help. And, we shovelled and basically have what looks like little paths everywhere.

A whole lot is going on! Karen visited a breeder of Shagya Arabians last week, top quality horses. If anyone is interested in Shagya's please let us know, these are horses that compete in Dressage, Jumping, and Endurance.

We started preparing for the return of our horses, Rose will come back this week! We are all so very excited to see her again. She's been boarded the last two months in order to wean her away from Magic. Preparing means that the paddocks needed to be shovelled out from the snow, fences put up, water tanks filled, you name it. Glory will be coming home now too from her training. We are looking forward to getting her riding outdoors now. Karen has also been working with the stallions. As it looks, they may be attending a Koerung in April! So, time to work those boys! How exciting! More details will be provided as the time gets closer.

We have also been contacted by Juliana! She is interested in spinning Curly Horse hair. Bunny Revaglia (who spins Curly Hair in America) helped us out with what we needed to know. We are very excited about this project, and if Juliana is able to spin things from our Curlies we will be showing off pictures and infos! Of course, Juliana has to wait until the horses shed their winter coats and we collect it and send it to her, so we imagine it will be several more months before we see some sweaters or such from Curly yarn!

Julia and Florian, Erwin and Karen's neice and nephew, are visiting for school break! Julia spent the day helping muck out stalls and the like, we have some pictures for you of a very sleepy Resi and Julia who took a ride today as her reward!

11.02.05 Woah, boy did we have snow! Erwin was stuck in Innsbruck unable to drive out to Upper Austria because the Autobahn (Freeway) was in chaos! Karen shovelled her way as best she could. The horses loved it! Hopping and jumping about and rolling. There were snow walls everywhere! Karen used Resi as a snow plow to get through at least to the roundpen so that she could put the horses out! The real snow plow had shoved the snow so high on the sides of the road that it was up to Resi's chest (let alone Karen's shoulders!) But, when Karen hoped over the the mountain of snow and asked if Resi wanted to also hop over while attempting to lead her out, Resi just plowed through! Great idea, thought Karen, and so Karen hoped on Resi and they plowed pathways for the rest of the horses! Such a good girl, Resi we mean! Alex came out and just stared, he hadn't seen anything like that before!

Then came Fasching (Carnival) and we had a great time. We will have some picture of Carnival for you shortly (I know it doesn't have to do with the Curlies, but it shows you just how much fun we have here).

Spring is in the air.... The birds are twittering despite well below freezing temps, and while we fight with the water pipes to keep the water flowing, the stallions spar and hop about. The fillies, Jo Jo and Moon, are flirting like mad with them, constantly fascinated by the stallions when they go out to pasture. The mares are becoming heavy with foal, and it's not long now before our babies will be arriving. Resi and Lark have about two months to go, and we are just so excitited we can hardly stand it! What will they be like, male or female, what color, what size? Most important, we want the mothers and foals to be healthy and ok.

For those of you who are color fanatics, Karen did a little color calculating based on our horses genetics. Keep in mind that our Stockhorse mares are good color producers and just about anything can happen! Here are the possibilities for our four foals:

  • RR Rescue Me x Clooney: Bay (Brauner), Sorrel (Fuchs), Black (Rappe), Grey (Schimmel)

  • DKH Glory x Clooney: Bay (Brauner), Sorrel (Fuchs), Black (Rappe), Grey (Schimmel)

  • Grulla Vaquera Lark x Warrior Billy Jack: Black (Rappe), Grullo (Mausfalbe), Sorrel (Fuchs), Red Dun (Rotfalbe), Palomino (Gold), Dunalino (Gold + Falbe), Yellow Dun (Falbe), Smokey Grullo (Mausfalbe mit verstecht Gold), Smokey Black (Rappe mit verstecht Gold)

  • Montana Blue Magic x Warrior Billy Jack: Black (Rappe), Sorrel (Fuchs), Smokey Black (Rappe mit verstecht Gold), Palomino (Gold), Grullo (Mausfalbe), Red Dun (Rotfalbe), Smokey Grullo (Mausfalbe mit verstecht Gold), Dunalino (Gold + Falbe)

You can see why we are soooo very curious!

We have some more news coming up regarding leasing our riding horses (Pflegepferde) and also training courses on ground work with young horses (Bodenarbeit mit junge Pferde) and riding, and also summer riding trips (Wanderreiten). So, we will be posting on these shortly. If you want info before the pages are posted, please contact us!

Karen has been slowly working on new pages for the website. We want to clarify our breeding program and why we breed the curlies that we do, what bloodlines we focus on and why. These are very important questions, and it is important to not just mix any bloodlines together. We'll be providing some very useful pages on the theory behind breeding, our concepts and why we are so strict! So, this is also in the works. Keep an eye out for updates and changes.

Our German pages will also be updated shortly!

We would also like to thank Schochering Franz for helping us get the pipes flowing again!

Please note, there has been a price update on Simson! Have a look! This horse is very highly trained, this is a very good price! (Price is for inside Austria not including 10% Mwst. please ask for quotes to export to Germany or other Countries.)

22.01.05 We're back! Karen and Erwin were sick with the flu the last couple of weeks so things on the website slowed down. The news is the big open stall is finished! Remember it was moved from the pasture we were leasing before to where the farm is? Well, now the roof is done and also a little area where the horses can walk on dry ground and not in muck! We'd like to thank Thomas, Alex, and their friends, and also our neighbors Moser and Schögl Hans for helping!

Looks like we forgot to mention that over New Years we weaned Rose! She was a good girl and is now together with an Arabian foal of the same age. They get along well, and Magic is fattening up now that the Rose is gone. Good thing too, Rose could drink a lot of milk in the day, and that was hard on Magic!

For those of you interested in Glory, we have some really fun stuff for you! Karen and Walter making videos! Remember that Karen has been training Glory under Walter's guidence, and today was only the second time Walter (our trainer) rode Glory. It was like going through an exam for Karen, who had to watch and ask how she did when he took her for a test spin! Most of the videos are with Walter riding (in Karen's saddle, that's why the stirrups are so short!) so that Karen could film. Walter took the camera at the end to show a little bit of Karen on Glory too. We are excited about Glory's progress, today she cantered for the first time with a rider on board! After the filming was over, she kept wanting to canter more, she seemed to like it.

Glory videos:

The files are presented in .MOV (Quicktime) and .AVI (Windows Movie Player). Please note that Erwin is working on the AVI files, some will come shortly. We have more video available if you would like to see something specific. Just ask! Please see pictures of Glory on our for sale page!

Karen is also working on updating the German page! Please be patient!

09.01.05 The news is coming fast and furious at the moment! We have new images for you of the stallions! You can see how big and handsome they have become!

If you are interested in breeding to a Curly stallion this year, please contact us about our guys. We have the option to provide AI (artificial insemination). Both stallions have successfully covered our mares and we are awaiting two foals from each of them this coming Spring (four foals all together). Our stallions are available to a limited number of bookings and we can also provide alternative arrangements. Please feel free to contact us about prices and arrangements and see our for sale page for a few more details.

08.01.05 We have added a new horse to the for sale list. We have decided to put DKH Glory up for sale. It was a very difficult decision, but we wish to keep Rose and since we cannot hang onto all our horses forever (although we would love to!) we had to chose one to put up for sale. Glory is a wonderful horse and is becoming a great riding mare. Please see our for sale page for more information.
