Archive News - July to December, 2006Note!New horses for sale April 6, 2006!! We now have News in German!!! Wir haben jetzt Nachrichten auf Deutsch!!! Please also see our new page on Registration! Old Updates
We would like to say hello to all our visitors from all over the world!! We are very excited that our webpage is a regular for many people from as far away as Australia, Russia, Japan, and of course all over Europe! We are very thankful for your visiting our website. We have fun with it! Updates from July to December 2006!30.12.06 The busiest time of year, and we made it through! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, and we have some really nice things to share with you! First of all, we all had a great Christmas celebration and we were lucky enough to share it all with our friends and family at the farmhouse, Webersdorf! Of course, on the 26th we had our traditional St. Stephan's Day ride in which our friends and family get together to take turns riding the horses. This year was special, since after the sun went down, we could all go into the warm kitchen of Webersdorf and enjoy Glühwein and Punch! Not to mention loads of cakes, chocolates and cookies. We of course have new pictures for you! Speaking of pictures we heard from many many of our friends and aquaintences, and we would like to share some Christmas pictures sent to us. So, hang on to your mouse, and enjoy the scenery! :) We heard from our friends Klaus and Claudia and they were kind enough to send pictures of Geenie and Joe! Geenie is the daughter of our stallion *Clooney and *Glory! Joe is the son of our stallion *Billy Jack and our mare, Magic! Look at how they have grown!
We were also so happy to hear from the Kramer Family, who in partnership with the Lössel Family own and ride Glory. They write that they are all very happy with Glory, and that one family is riding Western and the other English, and Glory does it all. The children from both families enjoy her very much and Jolene is becoming quite the rider! We have some very nice images of Jolene on Glory showing off her gallop! We are so happy that we were able to find the perfect home for Glory. Please enjoy these loveley shots!
As promised here come the St. Stephan's Day ride images! Erwin has also made some pictures of the horses! Enjoy! 05.12.06 The sales page has been updated with new horses, and our upcoming foals! Take a look! 02.12.06 Lot's of good and sad news today! First off, our niece Julia made a "2" in her Math's final! When she was younger she struggled with Math, and we always promised her that if she ever got a "2" (sort of equivalent to a "B"), she could choose one of our Curlies to ride and care for as a personal mount. Well, she was so excited when she found out, that she had to come over right away and tell us! Congratulations to Julia! And, of course she got to chose which horse she wanted as her riding horse. Well, she chose...Moon! We are totally thrilled with this combination. Moon is just the right horse for a Julia. Moon will be brought under saddle starting in the Spring, and Julia will help and at the same time learn about the process of training horses! OK, the sad news for us is that our baby (the first foal that was every born at Curlies Austria), Rose, has left us. She made her way at 2 O'clock in the morning to Switzerland :(. Of course, we are very very happy for her new owners, Roland and Karin Froehlich! You might say it was a hard birth at the end, but the Austrians have a really great saying, a hard birth means a BIG baby! And, that's a positive thing! We would like to congratulate Karin. We are sure that Rose has found a really nice home, with lots of training possibilities, new horsey friends, and a great new "person pal" to take care of her. Karin has lots of experience and will put this to good use with Rose! We cannot have found a better home for her, but we will miss her very much. Yes, well, and what would December be without Curlies Austria's once a year St. Stephen's Day ride! This year will be bigger and better. We are very excited to be able to go inside and warm up after riding, something we couldn't do before. We are all looking forward to the Glühwein and cookies! Not to mention the chance to get up on our favorite mounts. Let's see who we will bring together this year :). 24.11.06 Mud and muck! Oh dear, the snow left us and the temperatures climbed and we're swimming in muck. We were spoiled last year as the weather turned immediately cold and the snow stayed, and it was very comfortable for everyone (except when we had to shovel snow). But, this year is a nightmare. In the mean time, we are working on stall repairs and new paddocks for the stallions to get them out of the stall boxes and the mares in! In the mean time too, Karen and Erwin are preparing Webersdorf house for their move-in! This is exciting news, as Webersdorf is a lovely old farm house from 1863, and is in want of loving care. We'll be posting more on this as things develop. Rocky is doing well, he has a little cold in his eye though, so he is not yet integrated into the herd. And, we'll be having more news on other horses also soon! Look forward to changes here! As most of our regular readers will remember, last February or so, we had a visit from Gaby Kaercher, professional horse photographer and former Curly breeder. At that time, she did a Photo Story shooting using our Curlies and friends! Well, time flies, and it's now coming out in the news stands! We are so excited, and you can see us all in there (even Karen who really really did not want her picture taken, and Erwin!) You can also see our good friend Nici in the main role, our friend Marco, Nici's haflinger, Vera, and her baby foal, Eva and Kerstin our big helpers, and their friends Kerstin and Daniela, as well as Marco's friends Mani and Phipps, and the biggest surprise of all is of course, Mr. Zopf, who plays the hunter! Oh! And, of course our lovely mares: *RR Rescue Me, *Grulla Vaquera Lark and *DKH Glory (now sold)! According to Gaby the story comes out on December 1st in newstands, the name of the magazine (we think!) is "Pferde - Freunde fürs Leben." We have heard that it turned out well, and is very funny! This magazine is available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. (Normally we wouldn't put advertising in here like this, but we cannot help it if we are in the magazine!) Please note! Karen is having problems with her Mobile Phone! We are working to correct this problem. Email is the surest way to reach her at this time. Der Arzt vom Wörthersee 2 - Schatten in Paradies! Graf Film Productions has released production images of the filming! You can find a couple of pictures of *RR Rescue Me with the stars on their website! Please go to the following link to see Ulrich Reinthaller, Lara Joy Körner, and many other stars along with Rescue Me! Graf Film Webpage images of "Der Arzt vom Wörthersee 2" (Please be patient, it seems all our clicking at the Photo Gallery there has overloaded their gallery server, so give it a chance to recover. Karen has seen the images and they are all great, it just doesn't always load.) In relation to this filming, we would also like, for those interested in artistic readings, to announce the new CD from Ulrich Reinthaller, a lyrical drama "dir zur feier" from the poet, Rainer Maria Rilke done to the accompaniment of a harp. The piece is quite stunning, and well worth enjoying if you cater to theatre and music. (The language is German). Congratulations to Ulrich on this work. (We realize that this is a little off topic here, but since Ulrich was a fan of Rescue Me, we feel we can do the same back :). Please see his website for more details: 10.011.06 The Rock has landed! We are very excited and pleased to announce the safe arrival of our Rocky, *Poplar's Comanche Knight! He had a long trip and was very tired, but calm and did a great job. He is now resting up in the foaling box with a thick bed of straw in which he lays flat out, dreams and snores, catching up on lost sleep. He has a little bit of a snotty nose, so he's not yet allowed to go out, because we have very cold and windy weather. Soon, though, he'll be joining the other young horses and foals outside. Rocky has a very soft plush curly coat, very curly mane and tail, and gorgeous coloring. At the moment, he is a very dark chocolate brown, and his markings are facinating (his snow-cap blanket with appaloosa mottling around his mouth and elsewhere. He has very long legs, is going to be a BIG boy, and has gorgeous movement. We are extremely happy with him. We'll have pictures shortly as soon as we have a nice day (Don't worry Astrid we'll take some of Rain too :-D!) Karen will be working up a new page about Curloosas and their very long history in the Curly Horse to help folks understand (we've had some folks asking us about this). In other news, we are preparing for Rose's departure, the Froehlichs contacted us and plan to pick her up at the end of November if all goes well. We will miss her but we know Karin has a lot of handling experience and also the best trainers around in her region of Switzerland. She will be in good hands. 02.11.06 Snow. We have snow. It is freezing outside, and it happened so fast. The Autumn was so warm and wonderful. Only in the last week or so did the trees really start to turn color, and then wham! It went from very warm to cooler, colder, cold in a week! The horses knew this already though, as they have been growing their curls for well over a month now, and already Rain and Billy Jack have lovely waves. (Karen knows Astrid, she's going to send a picture! :). With the winter coming, things at the farm had to be put away. All the furniture, plants and equipment were quickly put into their winter storage places. The Duck got a new home too and she is now with two males! We're hoping she likes her friends. Erwin has been building fencing, and repairs. The stallions are getting new paddocks with more permanent fencing so that they are more secure. After such a busy year, Karen took a little time off from writing in order to catch up on other work, if you've been waiting for a response to an email or inquiry, expect it to arrive shortly as she gets back on track. The Hubers came to visit Jazz last week. They really were very pleased with her conformation and personality. Karen showed them how Jazz wears her halter, and now moves her head from side to side, and how she gives her feet when asked. Jazz is really growing a lot, and we need to get more images on line. Rocky is on his way! He will be arriving in LUX on November 7th, we are so looking forward to having him here! We have a lot of new horses for sale to list, please look for updates to the sales page shortly as Karen gets caught up! Speaking of images, we have new ones for you! Some images from Apropos Pferd in Wiener Neustadt! We want to thank Norea Pischl for the images at Apropos Pferd. We will be posting images of Jazz soon!
09.010.06 What a fantastic weekend! Apropos PferdIt all started on Wednesday, for "Apropos Pferd," the large horse fair in Wiener Neustadt (near Vienna) at the Arena Nova. With the pickup acting up, Karen needed transport to the fair, Nicole Sprickler jumped in to save the day and took Karen with her helpers, Eva and Kerstin, and also *Grulla Vaquera Lark out on the 3 hour drive to the fair. Thanks Nici! Eva and Kerstin then took over at the fair. They did a fabulous job. They had a great time, and told Karen it was like being on holidays. Great weather, and easy connections to the fair, and a load of great people there to help and assist them, the girls put on our part of the show in both the breeding demonstration, and in the "Magic Horse". They were very responsible and enjoyed themselves, and took turns riding Lark in the various events. The Doctor from Wörthersee 2
Well, and why did they do this??? Because Karen was busy taking care of Curlies Austria's budding starlet, *RR Rescue Me! On Friday, Rescue Me was requested back to the set of, "The Doctor from Wörthersee 2 - Shadows in Paradise," a Graf Film Production. So, it was 2 hours sleep and up at 6am for the long drive with Rescue Me to the set. Herbert, from Kieslleiden, was arranged to help us out by taking over the drive and working as assistant this time (rather than Eva and Hans Haas last time). The day started out grey and very cold. Over the mountain pass the car's temperature gauge read -1 degree Celcius...brrr. But as they arrived in Karinthia, the clouds dispersed and the sun emerged. By the time Rescue Me was on the set, it was a gorgeous day. We will not spoil the show by telling you the plot details (no spoilers here), but we can say that most of the main actors were there (if not all) and all together with extras, Rescue Me was working in the middle of a crowd of about 80 people. She did a wonderful job, and many there fell in love with her quiet nature and sensitive character. Karen, and Rescue Me too, was pleased with all the interest showed in Rescue Me, the Curlies, and horses in general. One who was not only careful in how he worked with Rescue Me, but showed keen interest by asking all the right questions, was Ulrich Reinthaller. He is classically trained in theatre and the arts (roles including Erhart in Ibsen's "John Gabriel Borkman", Ferdinand in Shakespeare's "The Storm", Felix in Schnitzler's "The Lonely Way") and an accomplished, prize-winning film actor, who plays the main character, "The Doctor from Wörthersee." He inquired about Rescue Me, her nature, her handling and the correct representation of her. It was a great pleasure to work with him, and he was kind enough to send an image of all three (Ulrich, Rescue Me and Karen) together standing before the rich greens and blues of the lake, Wörthersee. We will see if we can get permission to post it! Karen, Herbert and Rescue Me also had the chance to talk with Tobias Hoesl who loves riding, and wanted to jump on board Rescue Me and ride her down to the set! He has had a great deal of experience with horses including while working on the film "Winnetou's Return" not to mention a host of other films and TV series appearances. Tobias was great fun and helped us to pass the time while waiting for Rescue Me to be called to the set. Kathrin Beck (who can be seen in theatre and TV shows such as: "Kaisermühlen Blues" and "Komissar Rex"), played the role of the stable owner and lead Rescue Me about confidently. She was very open and friendly, and had a good hand keeping Rescue Me in position. We also worked with Lara Joy Körner, playing in the main female role, Peter Weissflog, the director (who was also very kind to us), and briefly met Heio von Stetten who stood behind Rescue Me for a group of seniors who had just debarked from a touring ship and were passing by. He joked with them as they took photos. All in all, it was a very pleasurable experience and we were happy to provide professional support. Apropos PferdWrapping up, it was back to Upper Austria for some sleep. Karen then drove on Saturday to Wiener Neustadt to catch up with the girls and Lark! Due to traffic Karen sadly missed the girls ride, but they had everything under control anyway. It was fun to sit and chat with the VPPÖ gang, and on Sunday, the girls invited Karen to ride for them! Karen rode in two breed presentations and then in "Magic Horse" galloping out of the arena. The fair and show at Apropos Pferd was a success, as was the filming in Wörthersee. Who would have thought we could get it all done, and have fun doing it!? As usually, pictures are coming soon! 02.010.06 We had a very exciting visitor this weekend. All the way from Denmark, Bodil Ashkenazy came to see the Curlies. Bodil is a singer and has a new CD out called, "C'est extra!" She has a long singing career, and you can read more about Bodil at her website: Bodil's allergy test went well. Although at the farm where all the horses were, she showed some allergies, we then decided to go on a 2 hour ride through the hills and valleys around the farm. And, on the ride Bodil showed no allergies at all! Bodil rode Lark and Karen rode Rescue Me. A great success. Everyone mark your calenders! The Curlies will be in Wiener Neustadt, at Apropos Pferd! this coming weekend from the 5th to the 9th of October. We are invited to once again participate in "Zauberpferd" (Magic Horse), the show program that the VPPÖ put on at the Wels Horse Fair. Look for us there! We're madly busy too at this time, because Rescue Me will be going to a filming once again to finish up the her role in the film production for "The Doctor from Wörthersee." We will let you know how that goes! 29.09.06 What a wonderful Fall. The weather is just lovely, sunshine and golden colors. Crystal clear skies. The fruits are ripe, but the leaves are still on the trees. Really nice. And, as the year ripens too, so do our stallions. Finally four years of age, the two gentleman are mature enough that they need their own space and place. Clooney and Billy Jack, after being like brothers for years, are now mature stallions, and as such require their own paddocks and stalls. The days of playing together are now over, as they are quite serious about the rough-housing. As they are maturing, though, they are becoming very nice mounts. Both are doing well in their groundwork and are coming along nicely under saddle. They are learning to move forwards, and also turn left and right, etc. We are enjoying their progress. Speaking of stallions, we would like to introduce a new member of our herd. He was born in Oregon, and is our future stallion prospect. He is a very special horse, is very curly, and carries the blood of appaloosas. This type of curly is called a Curloosa, and our mare Grulla Vaquera Lark is also one (her mother being an appaloosa also). Meet Rocky! His real name is Poplar's Comanche Knight, and he stems from top appaloosa bloodlines, and top Curly bloodlines. His mother is a Curly, with 32 stars (curly coated ancestors) in her pedigree, and also six appaloosas in there over the last 50 years. His father is from top appaloosa lines. We have a couple of cute pictures for you. 21.09.06 We had a great 10 days with Sarah Becker! She came down from Nürnburg to visit the Curlies, make an allergy test and take a beginning course in Natural Horsemanship and Western Riding. She did a great job and we enjoyed visiting with Sarah and her husband Heikko, who enjoyed the wonderful weather and the mountains here. Sarah came along really well, learning about ground work, horse handling, and the Western seat and signals. We look forward to seeing the Beckers next year! Other great news, we've been invited to take part in a filming with our mare, *RR Rescue Me! We will be posting more details in a couple of days about where, what and how. We are very excited about this development and hope that this will help promote awareness of the Curly Horse. Jo Jo's foal, Jazz is growing like a weed! She's so independent too. She runs about with Rain, who is now officially separated from her mom, *RR Rescue Me (Rescue Me kept letting Rain drink from her, and Rescue Me is carrying a new foal for May, so we had to finally separate the two). Jazz gets along with Moon too, who is in the same paddock. Moon is growing a big belly! She is also expecting her foal in April/May. We are very excited about Moon's first foal. 12.09.06 Just when you think it can't, it just gets busier! We have a lot of fun things going on here. First off, on Saturday the Aurachtaler Riding Club had their yearly Horse Games Trail competition for club members. Karen and Lark rode out there sort of just to support the games, and were totally unsure if they would participate. They arrived (with Marion) about 10 minutes before the start of the Class B trail course. Betinna said, you're going to ride aren't you Karen? And, Karen replied, uh...ok and joined the group walking through the various tests. There were cones to ride through, a U made of poles on the ground to ride through, a plastic sack with tin cans in it to take from one trash can and place on another. There were the poles to trot over (5 or 6) and a very narrow passage to ride through, stop and start again. Then the surprise barrier, car tires on the ground for the horses to pick there way through. Well, everyone did a great job all around. And, Karen did her ride too. She wasn't thinking much about it, just having fun when at the end they announced she and Lark won 1st place in Class B! Woooo! Totally shocked, she was just amazed. Class A was harder, having a Western Horsemanship type section in it too, where one had to canter in consequetively smaller circles. Well, Karen and Lark didn't go for that one, maybe next year!
This past week, the Walmutts were there for riding lessons, and Sarah Becker arrived for a 10 day stay to learn Natural Horsemanship and Riding with the Curlies. We've been invited to participat in Vienna Neustadt at a horse fair to recreate the very popular show program we had with the VPPOe in Wels in May, called "Magic Horse". We are looking forward to that. We have also been invited by a filming company to be involved in a film shooting. This is all very exciting. Our vet was there this week too, and so far this is the list we have of pregnant mares for next season:
To top it all off, we have been working on a list of horses for import for you. We've found some very nice horses and will be updating our sales page with them shortly! 30.08.06 - evening OK, Karen's got it for you. Of course, we only have the English version yet, but we'll start working on the German one shortly! What you've been waiting for is the story of our Open House in pictures! Have fun with it! Be sure to click on the images in the Open House page to get to more images!
30.08.06 We know you are waiting for them! And, Karen is almost finished with the image pages for you. In the mean time, please have a look at this article in the Salzkammergut Internet Newspaper (German) about our Open House!
We also like to mention a small correction to the Salzkammergut Rundschau that has a wonderful image and short article about Mitch published. The horse Mitch is on is not his own Curly, Shelby, which is still in America, but Wera the Haflinger owned by Nicole Sprickler. Mitch does own a Curly on which he hunts with bow and arrow. 29.08.06 Open House a Success! Woah! We did it! And, when we write "we," we mean "WE!" There are a lot of people to thank for making our Open House a success. Without them all, we would not have been able to put on such a nice well-rounded program. First and foremost, a big thanks goes to two young ladies who worked their butts off the entire day. Starting well before the day, Eva Baumgartner and Kerstin Kraler were asked if they would like to design the children's program. The girls put 100% effort into the program designing 11 stations for the kids to enjoy, from knocking stacked cans down with a ball toss, to riding a maze, to throwing horseshoes, riding with hoolahoop tricks and going into the forest to look for leaves!. The girls used their imaginations to come up with a spectacular program. Every child got a pass with a string to wear around their necks of how many stations they were able to complete, and a gift at the end. The program was a big hit, and it is estimated that these two girls with the very needed extra help of Eva's sister Kristina got approximately 40 children through the program. They also responsibly cleaned up all of the setup on their own, leaving the rest of the group time to concentrate on the big clean up. We cannot say enough thanks to Eva and Kerstin for giving so many families a great day! Another BIG thanks goes to Christian and Angie Stingl, and Herbert Pangerl (Popeye!) They provided the catering and drinks. They did a fantastic job keeping things flowing, with Popeye working the grill and Christian the drinks and Angie doing the serving and providing support. These folks did a great job as there were many more people than expected, and they even had to run twice to town to get more food and drink! The food was excellent, pork cutlets and grilled sausages, with potatoe salad, baked potatoes with sourcream and chive sauce and grilled green beans wrapped in bacon! Makes you drool doesn't it. Soft drinks, beer, and young wine were on offer. They also provided the tables and benches for our guests to sit on, and the beer tent to make sure everyone was out of the sun when not in the saloon. Many thanks! Erwin did a great job getting ahold of 200 country songs via Internet Radio. He was able to find a Texas radion station called, "Border Radio". We had everything from Johnny Cash to Otis Redding to everything in between. Special thanks goes to Alex Nussbaumer for lending us the sound system, it worked great. Alex also helped us with support when the fuses kept kicking out at one point! And another special thanks goes to Karl-Heinz Steinlechner for lending us a karaoke box with microphone and tape player so that we had sound at the riding field. Without these the we wouldn't have been able to provide the atmosphere we did! Thanks! More behind the scenes thanks goes to Julia, Rafaela, Florian, Jozi, and Stefan. Julia and Rafaela helped with moving horses about from boxes to pastures, brushing horses, leading them for folks to see, making sure they had water and hay, and with presentations. They were tremendous help and Julia made all the name plates that could be found all over the farm. The boys took over parking control, and made sure all the incoming cars were orderly parked so that we would have enough space! Good job gang! We also want to thank Moosmann for providing the Schnapps (although little was drunken) and Webersdorf Karli for mowing the field for us. We would also like to thank Sabine Kniemoos for lending us her brother's shooting bow and arrows for Mitch to use in the program. Thanks Sabine! We are also very thankful to Michaela & Uwe Ganglmair for bringing out their western stand with clothing and other western items. It made a gathering place for the people to chat and browse. We have some great images of these two coming up. And, you can see their shop in Altmünster at the crossroads on the lake. There website can be found at: http://www.us-trading.net/. Well, without all the participants in our show program, we wouldn't have had anything to show. We want to also say a VERY BIG thanks to those who helped us make it a great day and took the time out to come all the way to Webersdorf to participate in the show. Walter Lukas gets a deep thanks for offering to show us how it's done! With a top class performance of Trail and Pleasure, he is one of a kind. Sandra Haslbauer did a magnificent job entertaining the crowd, first with her reining demonstration, and then with her crowd pleasing cutting exhibition. Her kids played cow, and her stallion jumped easily a meter into the air with his enthusiasm at cutting. Sandra also did a great job explaining the techniques for us when Erwin accidently ran over the generator and the sound cut. Thanks Sandra. We also cannot thank Nicole Sprickler enough for lending us her Haflinger mare, Vera for Mitch Wilkinson to use, and also for putting on a great display of dressage riding with our mare, RR Rescue Me, and for stepping in last minute to help out with the stallion presentation. Thanks very much Nici! Of course, none of this all would have happened if Mitch Wilkinson from Texas hadn't decided to come and visit and offer to demonstrate Commanche Riding! We would like to give a very warm thanks to Mitch for coming and putting on a facinating demonstration and explanation of Native American Riding. He not only presented riding, but explained the concepts and passed around examples of Commanche tack to the audience. He spent time explaning and everyone had their ears glued to him! All this would have been enough, maybe, but it was made even better with the quality performance of Franz Treml and the Speical Effects! Their fire eating, sword swallowing, glass walking, nail bed laying, fire blowing show was a hit and a great way to wrap everything up. Thanks Franz and Special Effects! We of course also want to thank ALL the many visitors who came throughout the day. We had a steady stream coming and going, and a really great turn out. Of course, the weather was great and everyone kept asking if Karen was such a good girl that she got great weather for the Open House! Thanks everyone for visiting. We have over 100 images from Erwin, the Seidels (who provide us with photos for many years now), Suzie Panuschka and more coming from Nicole Sprickler, that we are processing, and some of these should be online later tonight. 24.08.06 When Claudia Schrötter, of Snaky-Water Ranch, was visiting while Jazz was born, she gave us some very nice professional images of Geenie and Joe. Claudia and Klaus purchased Geenie and Joe back in February, and boy have they grown into beautiful horses. We are very proud. We would like to share these images with you here. Introducing Geenie and Joe as yearlings!
We are getting ready for our big day on Saturday. Don't forget to come by and see us at our Open House which runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Our program so far: Come on down! 21.08.06 We've had more visitors. The Hubers were visiting again last weekend. They were here in Spring this year and came back to see our new foal, Jazz. They liked her so much that they chose to buy her! We are very excited for Leon, who is allergic to horses and has no problem with Jazz! The whole family is very pleased with their choice, and Mrs. Huber has years of horse experience so we know that when the time comes, Jazz will be going to a very good home. Jazz will be staying for about 6 months with her mother, Jo Jo, before making the trip to Bavaria. The Froeschls came to do an allergy test. Their 10 year old daughter is allergic to horses. She wanted to try a riding lesson and so we tested Rescue Me. She was able to hold out an hour with Rescue Me with only sensation of tickling in her nose. The next day, she took her first riding lesson and it went very well. She has a natural talent and enjoyed very much working with Rescue Me without allergies. The Cohrs came yesterday to also make an allergy test for their daughter! They are on holidays here in the region and thought they stop by since they live in Hamburg which is quite far away. This worked out very well. We first tested Rescue Me, but their daughter had a slight reaction in one eye. So, we got Jo Jo out of her box with her foal, Jazz, and ran the allergy test. To Jo Jo she had no reactions at all. We will be bringing Jo Jo under saddle this coming year, and so next year she can look forward to riding lessons on Jo Jo! The Frölich's from Switzerland were here yesterday. First of all to see the horses, and make an allergy test. Funnily enough, while Karen and Erwin were sitting at lunch in a the local inn's garten eating lunch, one table away, Karin and Roland were asking if the proprietor knew where we could be found! Everyone had a great laugh, since they were all right there. After lunch, it was down to see the horses. Karin showed no reactions to the Curlies, and Karin and Roland immediately decided to buy our two-year old, Rose! Rose will be staying with at Curlies Austria for a little while longer, while Karin and Roland work out stabling and import papers for Rose. We would like to say congratulations to the Hubers (buyers of Jazz) and the Frölich's (buyers of Rose)! We will be updating the sales page to relect the changes and also be adding some import selections. 17.08.06 We have pictures for you! Heidi in Finland sent us images of Twist, Oscar and Moonlight Day in their new pasture in Finland. Look how beautiful the foliage is! Heidi is very happy with her new horses and thanked us very much for making it a successful import. Please enjoy the photos. And, once again, Congratulations Heidi!
10.08.06 We at Curlies Austria are very excited to announce the successful import of three horses to Finland. Congratulations go to Linda VavRosky the breeder of the horses and Heidi Widnäs the new owner of three Curlies: *Twist of Mist, *Oscar and *Moonlight Day! Heidi plans on sending up pictures soon! Elmar, the transporter, enjoyed calling Karen at 6:30 in the morning to tell her that the horses were in the paddocks and enjoying themselves. Heidi offers riding in the forests of Finland on Curlies. If anyone is looking for camping out on a trail ride with Curly Horses, let us know and we can get you in touch with her. Jo Jo's filly has a name, it's *ZZ Jay Cee Jazz! She is very Jazzy, so the name really fits her well as she spurts and gallops and bucks all over the box. Karen is working on getting pictures of her. Webersdorf, in the mean time, is getting a face lift! Everything is being cleaned and polished for the upcoming Open House! Well, and we are just doing our spring cleaning a little late. We'll have some fun pictures for you soon of this as well. 05.08.06 Woah! What a packed couple of weeks! We have so much news to share, and hardly a moment to get it online! Let's see where Karen can even start. Visitors! We have been really blessed this year with visitors. A couple of weeks ago, Astrid came with Nando. Astrid bought *ZZ Diamond Rain a year ago, and she came to visit her. Astrid chose to camp at Webersdorf and it was really fun for us all. She got to spend lots of time with the horses, and enjoy all the events that happened over the week she was there! While Astrid was there, Tanja and David arrived with 11 month old Jonathan from Berlin! Some of our readers will remember that Jonathan is the youngest rider to sit on a curly while Tanja was pregnant with him! (Naughty Tanja, she didn't tell us). Tanja and David spent two weeks visiting, and Tanja worked on getting to know horses and how to handle them from the ground. We also did an allergy test which showed that she was not allergic to *Jo Jo. (Tanja was not allergic to *DKH Glory last time, and now that *Glory is gone, she hopes to ride *Jo Jo next year after *Jo Jo comes under saddle). While all of this group was here, we also got a visit from Suz! Suz recently invited us to do a presentation on the Curlies, and now she was in the area on holidays and we got to see her twice. At the same time, the Bodemann's turned up from Voralberg! They had visited us last year too, and also in Friedrichshafen. And, just as Astrid left to go home, Claudia and her friend Yvonne arrived from the Dortmund area! Claudia bought *ZZ I Dream of Geenie and *Magic Jackson Joe from us earlier this year. They got a tour of the horses and were lucky enough, like David and Tanja, to be present when something very special happened here at Webersdorf (see below)! Both Astrid and Claudia, and possibly Tanja too, hope to come and visit again in the fall! Import! The import is underway and the horses have arrived in LUX. As soon as they have reached their destination we'll be announcing more! Staw! While Astrid was here, we got a big delivery of straw. This was pretty amazing because Karen and Astrid were alone at the farm when the delivery came in on a huge trailer. The farmer, Hr. Reiter, and Erwin had worked out that he would dump the bales into our barn. Well, the trailer was so full, he couldn't get under the door at first, so the first row of bales had to be taken off, then he drove the trailer into the barn, and raised the bed and dumped the straw into the barn, he lowered it again to get under the door frame, and then raised it again to dump the rest out! The barn was just one big pile of bales! Poor Erwin had to come home and throw them all up into the loft alone! But, he did a great job. Astrid took some photos of this pretty amazing event. *Jo Jo foaled! We are really happy to announce the arrival of *Jo Jo's foal. *Jo Jo did a great job and handled it all on her own. She's a really great mom, and we are laughing because *Jo Jo got a foal with a personality similar to her own. The little filly is a pain in the butt to mom, and we are so happy that *Jo Jo finally has to deal with a pain in the butt, like she was always to us (*Jo Jo is always curious, and loves attention, she gets into things and loves to play, she also loves to dismantle stalls, destroy water buckets, and be the center of attention and has loads of energy, she is a very loving horse and never aggressive, just a cute pain in the butt!). We are so proud of *Jo Jo because she made the transition to mom perfectly. The filly is very long-legged, and surprise, surprise, she is a red dun. We were shocked, all our visitors kept telling us look it's a red dun. We didn't want to believe it at first. But, she has a very strong and distinct dorsal stripe and is a light red color. This means that *Clooney carries the dun gene under his grey. We never knew, and are so excited about this discovery. We cannot say if *Clooney is a red dun, a gold dun or a grulla (like our mare Lark) under his grey. We always thought he was a bay, but now we are proven wrong! And, we are very happy about that! The little filly will be getting her name shortly. She has a big white star, and a long white stocking on her right hind leg, and a sock on her left front. She gallops and trots like crazy in the box and rears and bucks! She is very lively and has mom going all the time! Open House! We invite everyone to our Open House. This is on August the 26th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. We will have a beer tent, food, Commanche Riding demonstration, Western Riding Demonstration and a Fire-Eater! Not to mention music and a Saloon and Western Articles for sale. So, come on down! While everyone was here we have tons of photos to show you! We will be updating all these later on today. We have new photos of Geenie and Joe, who look fabulous, photos of our visitors, and photos from Clooney! New photos of Rose, and shortly we will have photos of our new little baby from *Jo Jo. So, check back soon! 14.07.06 It is that time of year again, time to bring in the hay. Every year we present you our hay story, and this year is no exception. It all started last Monday when the weather report said that it would stay nice and sunny until Thursday. Erwin said, it's time to mow! We began at 6:15 am. At this point, we couldn't know that just about every machine at Curlies Austria would give Erwin one problem or another. From flat tires, to missing screws to heated rotary blades and loose nuts. Things went well until about midday. We ate lunch and heard the weather report, rain first thing Wednesday morning. They had changed their minds. Erwin already had three fields cut and laying. But, one of the rotary blades in the four-blade cutter for the tractor was heating up. He had to remove it from the cutting-works. With three blades and a hole in the middle everything would take longer. The big field was still not mowed, and there was big concern that if Erwin cut it there would not be enough time to bring in the hay before the rain came. Erwin looked at the satallite pictures and decided to go for it. After lunch he finished a row of standing grass on the upper field on the hill, and came down and tackled the big field. With the crippled mowing-works, it took until about 9:00 pm to complete. The temperaturs were hot, and with entire Webersdorf cut we could only hope for the best.
Tuesday looked good, although some big clouds built up in the afternoon threatening a summer storm. The heat was very intense, and given the grass was quite old before it was cut, it was rather dry anyway. Our friend, Rupert, came at midday, and thank goodness, because Karen sure couldn't do much to help Erwin with repairs! Things went faster then. Eva was there too, and we were able to finish raking in the edges of the fields and finally get to turning the hay. It looked very good. The fields that were cut early in the morning the day before were already dry. It was time to make a decision. Pull in the first three fields before the rain comes the next day! A call to the man with the bailing-machine, and on to making rows! Erwin sent to word out to friends that we were pulling in the first hay, and in the evening they came too. Thomas and Hans Kaltenbrunner and Konrat Laubichler helped Erwin and Rupert bring in the bales with the hay wagon while Karen and Eva stacked in the barn. Half the hay was in the barn! Early Wednesday morning Erwin, Karen and Rupert got up, and Rupert called Karen to the door saying, hold your hand out. Tiny misty droplets were landing on her hand. Oh no. The sky was covered with clouds and was a middle grey color. We won't make it, was the first thought. Regardless, breakfast was eaten, and Rupert and Karen went up to Webersdorf while Erwin had to work and go to an appointment rather far away. The sun came out. It got hot, maybe there was hope yet. The hay looked good, it was time to turn the big field. Rupert started about 10:00 am. Dark clouds were in the east and a wind started up. Karen called Erwin and said, lets get the bailer out before it rains, the hay looks good. The bailer was on his way. Karen finished the turning while Rupert started making the rows with the small tractor. The small tractor gave him problems, it had to be repaired. Karen and Rupert lost about an hour, and with the bailer showing up and saying that it had rained heavily out by where they were, not all the rows were done. No matter, the bailer started and Rupert tried to stay ahead of him. With the bails finally all done, it was time to begin the slow process of bringing them in. With Rupert and Karen alone and the sky threatening the whole time, there was no help for it but to start. It was a long process and at 3:00 pm Erwin came to help. By 6:00 pm the last of the bails came in, and Karen could only shout for joy. The weather had held and all the hay was in. Time to collapse. We had a lot of luck this year with the weather, Erwin called the right shot at the right time, and we had the help of our friends. We would like to thank everyone for helping us get the hay in, and a very special thanks to goes to Rupert. All together we brought 587 bails in. We have some pictures coming for you shortlty. 06.07.06 Curlies Go Networking! We are still getting caught up on the events that happened while the computer was down. On June 23, Curlies Austria was invited to take part in Communications Concepts Summer Networking Event! Our friend Suz teaches business English and her students who come from many different Austria firms, from banks to logging companies, took part. This event was their end-of-course celebration with about 80 people in attendance, her students and invited guests gave short speeches in English (or Czech!). Karen was invited, as an English-native speaker, to present the closing talk on the subject of the Curlies! We also brought Karen's 1972 built Canadian saddle to put on display. Included in the festivities were a barbeque with real hotdogs and buns, line-dancing by children, and building a living tree. It went over very well, and both Erwin and Karen had a great time. We would like to thank Suz for the invitation. Next Import! We are excited to announce we are working on our next import, this time to Finland via Luxembourg. We will keep everyone posted on the details as soon as the horses arrive. New Images! We've added new images of our stallions to their stallion pages. They have grown a great deal and are looking very mature now. We have also added images of the foals from each horse to their pedigree pages. To find pedigree pages, please visit the page "Our Herd" and under each description of the horses is a link to a pedigree page. You can easily look over the foals each horse has had. We provide here direct links to our stallion pages
04.07.06 Sadly, we announce the loss of Magic's foal, *ZZ Magic's Dark Dreamer yesterday evening. Dreamer was born 20 days early and was a fighter. We fed her two days around the clock with a bottle until she learned to drink on her own from momma. She began to suffer from a build up of gas and was immediately brought to the clinic where she had surgery. She was humanely put to sleep when she developed complications. We will miss her sorely, she was not only a beautiful foal, but had a wonderful trusting personality and fought very hard. We offer some pictures of out little Dreamer who now runs on the plains with her ancestors in her own Dreamland.
03.07.06 OK! Looks like we are up and rolling once again. Let's get caught up! What have we been up to!?
We were very excited to take part in this very professionally presented amateur theatre. "Magic Horse" was very well received, and we have some nice images for you. (Please note to our Native American friends and readers: the costumes worn by Curlies Austria are meant for a childrens fairy tale and are not meant to be authentic by any means. The story places the Native American and the Curly in a postive light and makes a historical connection between the two.) Magic foaled! Magic had a beautiful little smokey black filly with three white feet and a cute blaze! She looks nearly identical to Joe, the colt Magic produced last year for us! The father is *CCG Warrior Billy Jack. We will be tell you more about her in the upcoming updates and will be working on some images for you. Breeding Season! The breeding season has come and gone for the most part at Curlies Austria. We are very excited to announce that *Grulla Vaquera Lark is expecting a foal from *CCG Warrior Billy Jack and *RR Rescue Me is in foal to *Clooney for 2007! Both foals should be arriving early next spring. We also bred Warrior White Moon to *CCG Warrior Billy Jack. We still need to do an ultra-sound on Moon to confirm if she took (both *Lark and *Rescue Me are confirmed). We are still waiting for *Jo Jo's first foal, which should arrive at the beginning of August. *ZZ Jack's Lark'n Lady *Lark'n Lady, bred by Curlies Austria, had her birthday last month. She's now a yearling, and the Riemanns her new owners at Riverside Curly Horses were kind enough to send us a picture! Boy is she lovely! *Lark'n Lady is out of *Grulla Vaquera Lark and *CCG Warrior Billy Jack. We thought we'd share, we are very pleased with this match! Congrats again to the Riemanns.
02.07.06 Woah! Were have Karen and Erwin been!? Well, due to a computer dying, it took a while to get back up and running! We've now got all the programs installed and configured to make updates once again. And, as usual there is a lot to update. First, Karen is going to work on updating the German pages which were behind. And, then, she's going to tell you all about what's been happening here at Curlies Austria! We appologize to all our addicted fans for the lack up updates, hold onto your hats now because here they come! Please note: Karen has moved news from July to December of 2005 into the archives. |
