The Show!

Everyone gathers at the upper field where the riding arena is staked out to see the show!

Walter Lukas, Austrian Trail Champion, is the first on. He works his way through the course sidestepping a table top, going over and around poles and cones, and opening and going through and closing a gate. He shows us just how controlled a Trail horse should be using his tournament gelding, Joe. He then demonstrates Pleasure movements in various gaits as the trot, lope, gallop, and extended trot.

Next it was Sandra who showed us how reining works, and cutting! She first showed us the cirlces and flying change of hand, and then got kids to play cow for J.W. Panic Power who just loved it.

Nicole Sprickler entered the ring with our mare *RR Rescue Me, to show off what Curlies can do! She demonstrated dressage moves in collected and extended gaits. Way to go Nici and RM!

Of course, while all this was going on, Mitch Wilkinson patiently waited his turn standing on a hilltop looking very impressive on Wera, the Haflinger (owned by Nicole Sprickler)! In his program, he took the time to explain to the audience about the different pieces of tack the Commanche used. He showed the audience a horse whistle made of goosewing bone (traditionally made from an eagle's wing, but they are too rare these days to find). He passed about a quirt made from the antler of an deer, and also an indian war bridle. He explained how the Commanche rode with loops for the knees and that they used a saddle pad like a pillow to protect the horses' backs. He explained how the war bridle tightens on one side and loosens on the other, controlling how much pressure is on the horse's mouth. And, he demonstrated how the Commanche shot with bow and arrow from horse back. He took a lot of time to explain these things to bring across the indian way of life. At the end, Nicole (Wera's owner) decided to ride home Commanche style. Nici and Mitch pose for a photo!
